Julie
has been writing successfully since 1971. She has had her articles published
in local, national, and international magazines, as well as on the web, on
subjects as diverse as skiing for the disabled and financial institutions,
Canadian submarines and writing. Julie's first book, Through a Canadian
Periscope; the Story of the Canadian Submarine Service, was published by
Dundurn Press of Toronto in 1995. Not only was it hailed as “a major
contribution to our naval history,” Canadian booksellers chose it for
Books for Everyone for Christmas 1995. Her second book, Deeply
Canadian: New Submarines for a New Millennium, appeared in the fall of
2000 electronically and later in print.
Sing a New Song: Portraits of Canada’s
Crusading Bishops is Julie’s latest book, from Dundurn (2006).
The next is James Douglas: Father of BC, a young adult biography due
in Spring 2009 (Dundurn again).
Since early 2002, Julie has also self-published seven
books for
writers, teachers, and speakers, as well as three, full-colour family memory books, and one travel memoir.
Not only is Julie a successful
author, she is also an accomplished professional speaker and
trainer who has presented at the Surrey International Writers’ Conference
for nine years and
instructs at Vancouver Community College. Her acclaimed presentations have
assisted dozens of aspiring authors to submit their work for publication
with skill and confidence, several of whom are now published with leading
Canadian publishers. Julie also provides keynotes and breakouts for writers, speakers, and
grade 4-12 teachers and their students that inspire and empower participants
to develop their writing skills. Her
presentations include Writing with Power!!,
Bright…but Can’t Write, Reaching Reluctant Writers, Crafting
Irresistible Query Letters, and Book Magic: Turning Writers into
Published Authors, and many more. School districts and
teachers' associations make up the majority
of Julie’s clients asking her back time and again for their professional
development events. Organizations such as the World Ship
Society and the National Press Club in Ottawa have enjoyed her lively,
well-illustrated presentations on Canadian naval history. Julie has appeared
on TV and local and national radio discussing Canadian submarines and
church history,
and has also participated in several successful readings and book signings.
Julie’s “coaching
towards publication”practice
guides individuals who seek either commercial or self-publication for their
books and/or articles.
Julie was born and educated in England and became a Canadian
citizen thirty-seven years ago. She lives in Port Moody, British Columbia,
is married to James, a former submariner and commanding officer of HMCS/M
Okanagan, and they have one daughter who is a sommelier.
