Julie Ferguson with her publishing successes...

GET PUBLISHED ON
YOUR FIRST TRY!

A Guide for Canadian Writers

Workshop also available as e-book or paperback here

Vancouver-based author and workshop leader, Julie Ferguson, sympathizes with many writers who are having difficulty getting their work published. Canadian publishing is a complex and demanding world, full of insider rules and financial constraints which, if not respected, cause good manuscripts to be returned unread and first time authors to question their calling.

Get Published on Your First Try! is the seminar series for writers who:

  • are thinking of writing a book;
  • are writing a book;
  • have a manuscript ready for a publisher; or
  • are soon to be published.

This seminar is packed with practical hints and proven resources that writers need to get published in Canada. Using interactive techniques, a lively PowerPoint presentation, exercises, and examples of book proposals and contracts, it reveals the mysteries of the publishing world so that aspiring authors can develop the confidence to submit manuscripts to publishers and, ultimately, to succeed. Several previous participants in this seminar series have had their manuscripts accepted by leading Canadian publishers such as Penguin Canada and Prentice Hall.

Broken into four modules, which can be taken individually, you will learn:

  • How to get a manuscript accepted by a commercial press.
    Discover the real facts about the Canadian publishing industry and how they assist writers. Learn about e-publishing. Hone your research skills to identify the eight, most suitable publishers for your book. Develop an irresistible query letter and an winning book proposal or synopsis. Format proposals/synopses and manuscripts the professional way...and more!

  • How to negotiate your first Canadian publishing contract.'Get Published' workshop participants (Photo: Ferguson)
    Work through a typical publishing contract. Discover what the clauses mean, which are negotiable, and which are not. Find out the scoop on Canadian advances, royalties, and rights, especially electronic rights. Identify who can help you. Learn to negotiate from a distance...and more!

  • How to cooperate in your book's production phase.
    Understand the editor/author relationship. Discover what goes on in a publishing house from manuscript acceptance to the publication of the book. Find out what decisions you can influence and how to do your part. Learn about production schedules, editing, jacket design, artwork, indexing...and much more!

  • How to promote your new book and increase its sales.
    Learn how much publishers rely on authors for promotion. Learn about effective publicity, promotional copies, reviewers, and advertising. Discover ways you can promote your own book in writing, in the media, and on the Internet. Find out how to get on radio and TV all over Canada. Learn how to organize your own book readings/signings and even book tours...and more!
