Presentations and Workshops
for Writers

Julie Ferguson is a speaker and writing instructor

Julie H. Ferguson is not only a successful author of four books on Canadian history and 15 others, she is also an accomplished writing instructor and professional speaker. Since Dundurn Press published her first book, Through a Canadian Periscope, in 1995, she has been much in demand, especially for writers' conferences and other events for writers around the Pacific Northwest. See her schedule here.

Julie delivers customized, lively presentations. Here is a sampling:

All Aboard the Electronic Express! How to Self-publish and Sell your Ebooks. The nuts and bolts of preparing manuscripts for publishing services like Smashwords and Kindle Direct Publishing and strategies for successful ebook promotion. (Half or full day.)

E-books, E-readers, and E-publishing: Are You Ready? (Versions for readers or writers.) Over the past year, e-books, e-readers, and e-publishing have seen an explosion of demand. Commercial publishers are scrambling to convert print titles to electronic, and emerging and established authors aren’t quite sure how to publish in this new format. Discover more about this exciting opportunity with an author who has done it all. Julie will demystify the technology and get you started. (Half-day session)
I admire the quantity of knowledge you both have and the energy with which you use it. David Glenn, author of The Queen's Sword series, Feb 2011.
Wonderful! Full of information and step-by-step instruction. Especially good for promotion online. Fantastic and timely!
Enthralled [me] Participants at the March 2011 presentation for Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby, BC.

Pitching Magazine Articles in the 21st Century  (Also a special version for travel writers.) Today writers must pitch their ideas differently, develop an area of expertise, revitalize their writing, and offer editors more than just an 800 word article. This session demonstrates how easy it is to add value that editors and readers of print and online periodicals can't resist.    (Half-day or 2 hour session)

Book Magic: Turning Writers into Published Authors was first presented  at the Surrey International Writers' Conference in 1999 and at Word on the Street in Vancouver in 2000 (updated annually). Participants discover that breaking into Canadian publishing is easier than they suppose.... (Half- and full-day sessions)
Also available as a paperback and an e-book
.

How to Craft Irresistible Query Letters that Result in Publication teaches writers how to craft query letters that generate excitement and result in invitations to submit their work to publishers or agents. (Half- and full-day sessions)
Also available as a paperback and an e-book

Julie H. Ferguson

Marketing Out Loud. An essential workshop if you're meeting editors and agents at a writers' conference. Avoid sweaty palms and tangled tongues by preparing and practicing for the 15 minute appointment. Learn what editors/agents want to know; what to take with you; compose your verbal pitch; identify the questions you must ask; and recognize when to stop talking and listen. (Two hour session for writers' conferences)

Brainstorming Brilliant Bios. Every writer needs both short and long bios to convince editors and agents that you are ideal to write a particular article or book. Don’t let your bio let you down! Learn how to compose a zinger. (Half-day session)

Writing with Power! (aka Crack Open Your Creative Channel) is a creative writing workshop, with a difference, that forever changes the way writers write. No grammar in this  session! (Half-day session)
Also available as a paperback and an e-book

For family historians and photographers - ideal for library programs

Participants at recent presentations say ...

Get Published on Your First Try! (co-presented with Debra Purdy Kong)
... I was impressed by the authors skills and styles of presentation. The topic [addressed] the pros and cons of  self- publishing versus traditional publish-ing' and was well-researched and substantiated with a long list of solid information, sources, and resources.
I have never considered self-publishing in the past. Today, as a result of this seminar I can informatively say  "I will certainly give serious consideration to self- publishing as an alternative to traditional publishing".
I would highly recommend this presentation to everyone interested in writing and publishing a book.
Val B-T, New Westminster Writers and Renaissance Books Writers, October 2010
